Registering to vote

In Minnesota, a person must register to vote before you can vote. There are two options to registering to vote: You may register up to 20 days before Election Day or on Election Day at your polling place. Your name will appear on the polling place roster if you choose to register to vote at least 20 days before Election Day. Your registration will remain current until you move, change your name or do not vote for four consecutive years.

Election Day Registration

If you are not registered or you need to update your registration on Election Day, you may do so at your polling place. Your polling place is based on the location of your residence. For Lent Township residents, your polling place is the Lent Town Hall.

You are required to provide proof of residence when registering on Election Day. You must have one of the following with your current name and address in the precinct to verify your residence:

A Valid Minnesota driver's license, learner's permit, Minnesota ID card, or receipt for any of these; a valid student ID card including your photo; a Tribal ID card that contains your picture and signature; a valid registration in the same precinct under a different name or address; a notice of late registration sent to you by your county auditor; a voter registered in the same precinct as you who can confirm your address with a signed oath.

Or, you may provide both an expired photo ID and a utility bill due within 30 days of election day with your current name and address in the precinct.

Absentee Ballots

Absentee voter ballots are available for all elections. They provide voters with a convenient method for casting a ballot when they are unable to attend the polls on Election Day. As a registered voter, you may obtain an absentee voter ballot if you are: 60 years old or older; unable to vote without assistance at the polls; expecting to be out of town on election day; in jail awaiting arraignment or trial; unable to attend the polls due to religious reasons; or appointed to work as an election inspector in a precinct outside of your precinct of residence.

If you are in the Military or will be overseas on Election Day you will need to complete the Military/Overseas Application. All others should use the Absentee Ballot Application. For Primary and Absentee Ballot applications can be obtained from Chisago County 45 days prior to the State Primary and the State General Election. For Lent Township elections in March, Absentee Ballot applications are available from the Lent Town Clerk 30 days prior to the election. Return the completed application as soon as possible to the election official from whom you received it.

Remember, your Absentee Ballot Application must be signed in order to process; do not submit more than one application for each election; your absentee ballots will be mailed or delivered to you as soon as they are available; and ballots received by election officials after Election Day will not be counted.
